1) Om Beach (3 Km from City Centre)

This crescent shaped beach resembles the letter ‘Aum’ in Sanskrit and is aptly named as Om Beach. A small drive from the city center, through the western ghats takes you to Om Beach.
Om Beach is one of the most popular places to visit in Gokarna on your trip.
Parking is available and you can park your car or bike easily and walk down to the beach.
After you park your vehicle you need to descend from the stairs nearby. After you park your vehicle you need to descend and you will find one of the most popular cafes of Gokarna, Namaste Cafe right at the beginning of the beach itself.
Also, the first part of the beach is crowded and you will get to see all the water sports here. Water sports here include Kayaking, Banana Rides, Floating bed Rides and others. Each ride can cost you Rs. 300 to Rs. 500 per person per ride.
You can also try the Dolphin cafe which is right at the center of the Shape Om on Om Beach.
At the center, you will get a lovely sight of the entire beach.
The sand on the beach is soft and it is a pleasure taking a walk on this extensive beach. If you walk to the other end of the shape om, you can even walk towards another hidden beach, the Half Moon beach but it is quite a trek down there.

2) Gokarna Beach (Close to City Centre)

Through the streets in the markets of Gokarna, you will reach Gokarna Main Beach in no time. Set your feet on this extensive and most famous beach of Gokarna. This is Gokarna Beach with lovely golden yellow sand.

Gokarna Beach is clean and it’s so big that even while it has so many visitors it would still look empty. There is a lot of parking space at the beach where you can park your vehicle as well.
One can easily enjoy the sea waves by getting into the waters. You can even sit and relax or take a long walk on this beach.
Apart from the above activities this beach hosts few water sports too.
Travel Tip – This is the only beach in Gokarna from where you can see the sunset so set your time to be here in the evening.

3) Mirjan Fort (21 Km from Gokarna)

The unique Mirjan Fort is on your right after you travel for 45 minutes from Gokarna towards Udipi on NH 66.
The fort is unlike forts of Maharashtra which are located on the hill tops but this one is almost on the sea level. You can take a walk within its premises and admire the reminisces of a glorious past.
This fort was ruled by the Rani Chennabhairadevi for the maximum period of time. She ruled this fort for more than 50 years and lived here as well.
She was known for her trade in pepper. Hence the Portuguese called her Rainha De Pimenta, which means the Queen of Pepper.
Some places within the fort are restricted but otherwise it quite open to walk around. You will need around 1 or 1.5 hrs maximum to visit this fort in completion.
The Mirjan Fort looks clean without any litter anywhere as it is maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India.
Also, your vehicle can go right up to the fort entry where you will find parking.

4) Yana Caves (52 Km from Gokarna)

Yana Caves is a rock formation which is not seen anywhere in India. It is an out of the world experience in Gokarna. It is unbelievable that such a beautiful place exists near Gokarna.
At a distance of around 1 hr from Gokarna you can reach Yana Caves via a scenic drive through small villages and forests.
As you reach here, you will get to park your vehicle on the outside. You can enter by taking a ticket.
There is a downward climb of 30 mins after the entry. Throughout the climb down, you will witness a natural habitat with tall trees and dense forest which is safe.
After walking for 25 to 30 mins you will start to see a large black crystalline rock formation at a distance and you will be exposed to a view of a lifetime. Wait here and behold as the same will not be seen from up close.
At the base of the rocks is the entry to the caves. As you reach the base of the rocks, you need to remove your shoes and wash your feet before you enter as you will enter through a small Shiva temple.
The next climb is of around 90 stairs and you finally enter the Yana Caves.
The caves are formed due to limestone phenomena known as stalactites and stalagmites.

5) Vibhuti Falls (42 Km from Gokarna)

On the way to Yana Caves, one can even visit the Vibhuti Waterfalls. Vibhuti Waterfall is a 3 drop waterfall in which the top drop can not be viewed from the bottom.
This waterfall comes from the Yana Caves which is why the water is mixed with limestone giving it a white colour and hence the name Vibhuti.

6) Kudle Beach (5 Km from Gokarna)

This is another popular beach which is in the vicinity of Om Beach with the route same as Om Beach. It too has parking at the top and a lovely pathway downwards to the beach.
It is a relatively small beach in C shape and hence well guarded from the sea waves. This makes it safe for kids and families.
It has many shacks with international visitors.

7) Mahabaleshwar Temple and market (Close to City Centre)

An ancient Shiva temple awaits as you close in through the narrow streets of Gokarna. This temple popularly known as the Mahabaleshwar temple lies almost on the Gokarna Beach.
Travel Tip – Tourists need to keep in mind that you will need to be traditionally dressed if you want to visit the Mahabaleshwar temple.
If not dressed traditinally, then you will be denied entry. Dhoti Kurta for the men and saree for women is the dress code so keep it mind.
Just out of the temple, you will find the Gokarna Market. It is bustling with activity and one can shop for spices, garments and ornaments. The quality of spices is top notch. You can get very high quality spices here for cheap.

8) Kumta Beach (3 - 4 Km from Gokarna)

This is an extensive beach with small settlements here but it is fun to be here. You will get a lot of homestays here. We too stayed here for 2 nights along the beach.
Travel Tip – One should know that when you stay along the beach there is a constant sound of the waves and some might find it annoying. Even the sand keeps entering your room is an additional worry.
But nevertheless it is an experience to live the beach life.

9) Belekan Beach (7 Km from Gokarna)

Belekan Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches of Gokarna with clean sands. It is one of few places near Gokarna which hardly has any crowd. You can swim and have fun without any disturbance.
With its clean and beautiful sand, Belekan beach looks truly international.
You will get some shacks here and we visit this one on the beach.
It has accommodation as well. We didn’t see any water sports here as this beach is not known by many.

10) Paradise Beach (7.5 Km from Gokarna)

Paradise is a small and secluded beach. On the way to Om and Kudle beach you will get this small off road which will take you around 20 min to get to the parking lot.
Paradise beach needs an offbeat drive and steep hike of around 30 – 40 Mins both sides.

Gokarna temperature lies between a maximum of 33o C and Minimum of 20o C throughout the year. It has the typical climate of coastal places. Hot in the summers and humid throughout the year.

Best Time to Visit Gokarna

Winters are the best time to Visit Gokarna. Hence, from September to January end is the ideal time to be in this Coastal town. With clear blue skies and bright light the photos you click will look better during these months.
Due to a hot, sultry and humid climate summers are not the best time to visit Gokarna. Hence, the months of April and May till mid June can be avoided. Monsoon is cooler but humid due to the gathering of clouds.
